2008 MASTER MINDED (Jockey: Ruby Walsh, Trainer: Paul Nicholls)

A simply sensational performance from Master Minded in what had been one of the most keenly anticipated races of the 2008 Cheltenham Festival, the five-year-old, the first of his age to succeed in 49 runnings, trouncing 2007 winner Voy Por Ustedes (5/2 favourite in the Cheltenham betting) by 19l and 16l. Cheltenham statistics suggested that Voy Por Ustedes faced a difficult task, as no Queen Mother winner had gone recorded successive wins in the race since Viking Flagship in 1994 and 1995. The return to Cheltenham, where he also won the 2006 Arkle, was a major plus, but despite getting the required strong pace, was no match for the winner. Third-placed Fair Along was never going the pace and lost his place badly down the far side. It was only after the second-last that he began to stay on again to take a very remote third on the run-in.

2007 VOR POY USTEDES (Jockey: Robert Thornton, Trainer: Alan King)

The 2006 Cheltenham Festival winner came of age, following up his previous season's Arkle success by 1½l and 5l from River City and Dempsey. 2006 Champion Newmill was 2½l further back in fourth. Well Chief (Evens favourite in the Cheltenham betting) got no further that the second, his exuberance off a fast pace leading to a neck-wrenching fall. Arkle winners have traditionally performed well in this race, and that race's Cheltenham statistics are an excellent guide to winner-finding.

2006 NEWMILL (Jockey: Andrew McNamara, Trainer: John Joseph Murphy)

The 16/1 winner took full advantage of the third-fence departure of Cheltenham betting favourite Kauto Star, to beat Fota Island and Mr. McGoldrick by 9l and ½l. Cheltenham statistics show that Mr. McGoldrick gained some compensation with a surprise 66/1 success in the 2008 Racing Post Trophy.

2005 MOSCOW FLYER (Jockey: Barry Geraghty, Trainer: Jessica Harrington)

Moscow Flyer (6/4 favourite in the Cheltenham betting) reclaimed his Champion Chase crown, which slipped with an early exit in 2004, confirming his position at number one in the 2m chasing charts. 2004 Arkle winner, Well Chief, was a 2l runner-up, after 2004 winner Azertyuiop blundered away his chance.

2004 AZERTYUIOP (Jockey: Ruby Walsh, Trainer: Paul Nicholls)

The complexion of the race was somewhat spoilt by 2003 winner, Moscow Flyer (5/6 favourite in the Cheltenham betting) unseating Barry Geraghty at the fourth-last. His departure left the 15/8 winner to come home by an impressive 9l from 2002 winner Flagship Uberalles, with Tiutchev third.

2003 MOSCOW FLYER (Jockey: Barry Geraghty, Trainer: Jessica Harrington)

Starting 7/4 favourite in the Cheltenham betting, Jessie Harrington's 2002 Arkle winner was an impressive winner by 7l and 3l. The 2002 placed horses again filled the minor berths, with 2002 victor Flagship Uberalles back in fifth.

2002 FLAGSHIP UBERALLES (Jockey: Richard Johnson, Trainer: Philip Hobbs)

The 2000 Cheltenham Festival runner-up, starting as 7/4 favourite in the Cheltenham betting, produced a thrilling surge from the second-last to deny Native Upmanship and Cenkos by 3l and ½l, with 2000 winner Edredon Bleu, 5l further back in fourth.

2001 Cheltenham Festival abandoned – foot and mouth epidemic

2000 EDREDON BLEU (Jockey: Tony McCoy, Trainer: Henrietta Knight)

Edredon Bleu provided the Knight-McCoy combination with compensation for a narrow defeat in 1999. The 7/2 chance battled on bravely to beat 1999 third, Direct Route, by a short head. Flagship Uberalles, (11/10 favourite in the Cheltenham betting) the 1999 Arkle winner, found conditions too fast. He was handily placed throughout and jumped pretty well, but he was starting to struggle when he hit the second-last quite hard, and although still only a length off the lead at the last, he was quickly beaten on the run-in. Cheltenham statistics show he gained compensation by winning the race in 2002.

1999 CALL EQUINAME (Jockey: Mick Fitzgerald, Trainer: Paul Nicholls)

1998 Grand Annual winner Edredon Bleu (3/1 favourite in the Cheltenham betting) made a brave attempt to make all, but he was by no means foot-perfect on ground that his connections feared might ride a bit dead for him. Although his pilot, Tony McCoy, set a sensible pace before going for home after a great jump at the fourth-last, he was there to be shot at. The winner retained his unbeaten record in 5 chases, leading in the last 100 yards, with Direct Route 3 ½l back in third.
